The most beautiful castles and palaces in 360° Alpenland

If walls could tell stories, they would speak volumes in the heart of Upper Austria. Castles and palaces in 360° Alpenland in Upper Austria are some of the region's most impressive cultural landmarks - whether medieval hilltop castle, tranquil castle ruins, historic country estate, moated castle or baroque landmark in the town centre.

Between the foothills of the Alps, river valleys and historic towns, the past comes alive. The buildings tell of the power, culture and life of bygone eras and blend harmoniously into a landscape where nature and history are inextricably linked. They tower over the Enns, nestle against wooded hills or open their doors in the middle of the town centre - as places of living history, from the Middle Ages to the Biedermeier period, from fortified walls and towers to magnificent halls and quiet courtyards.

In the 1,000-year-old town of Steyr, historic buildings blend harmoniously into the established townscape. Around Enns and Steyr, aristocratic residences and manor houses tell of the wealth of times gone by. Castles in the surrounding area - between Kirchdorf an der Krems, Bad Hall and the south of the region - also invite visitors to exhibitions, concerts and encounters. Some are museums, others are event venues or simply silent witnesses to history in the great outdoors.

What makes these places special is not just their architecture. It is the interplay of landscape and history: a walk through the castle park with a view of the mountains, a guided tour through cool walls on a summer's day, a concert evening in the arcaded courtyard. The distances are short - from the town square to the countryside, from cultural enjoyment to the view of the Alpine foothills.

This makes a cultural journey in 360° Alpenland a holistic experience. Between mountain feeling, cultural diversity and a place of power, a moment is created that stays with you.

Altpernstein Castle in Micheldorf

High above the Kremstal valley, on a prominent rock near Kirchdorf an der Krems, Altpernstein Castle has watched over the valley since the 12th century. Anyone who chooses the path up quickly realises that this is not just about walls and towers, but about attitude, vision and the quiet power of a place that has endured for centuries.

The ascent leads through forests and along narrow paths - a brief moment in nature before the view opens up at the top over the Krems Valley, the gentle hills around Bad Hall and as far as the mountains between Pyhrn and Priel. On clear days, the 360° Alpine landscape reveals itself in all its splendour: from Alpine peaks to wide open fields, from historic towns to quiet valleys.

Losenstein castle ruins

High above the village of Losenstein, the castle ruins rise like a stone lookout point over the Enns Valley. The ascent leads through forest and along narrow paths - step by step, the view opens up to the river, rocks and the striking mountains in the south of the region. History becomes tangible here, without staging, carried by wind, space and time.

The former hilltop castle is one of the most important ruins in Upper Austria. Once the seat of the Lords of Losenstein, it tells of power, trade and border defence along the River Enns. Today, it is the mighty walls, round arches and vantage points that remain - and the quiet impression of how closely nature and culture are connected here.
