The Schiederweiher was built between 1897 and 1902 by k. & k. Court architect Johann Schieder of Friedrich Eckbrecht Count von Dürkheim-Montmartin.
In order to stop the increasing silting up and algae growth, the municipality of Hinterstoder, with the support of the public authorities and the owner, Carl Duke of Württemberg, carried out an extensive restoration project in the winter months of 2004/05.
The weir system of the Schiederweiher at the inlet, including the inlet structure, was renewed. Bank reinforcements were built along the dam and the weir at the outlet was rebuilt according to the original plans. Safety measures were implemented along the well-known Polsterlucken hiking trail and a viewing platform was created.
In autumn 2018, the Schiederweiher emerged as the clear Austrian winner of the ORF2 live show "9 Plätze - 9 Schätze"!
The dredging work on the Schiederweiher pond resulted in a considerable amount of sludge totalling around 11,000 m3, which was transported to surrounding areas in agreement with the water rights, forestry and nature conservation authorities. The main focus of the remediation work was on ecological compatibility - so the reed beds and shallow shore areas remained largely untouched.
The fish population in the Schiederweiher was significantly reduced by means of net fishing before the start of the restoration work. Most of the remaining fish were taken to a nearby pond for overwintering and the rest were "released" into the Steyr when the weir was opened. Uninvited guests (otters) reduced the fish in the wintering pond by two thirds. A large proportion of the fish food living in the sediment was lost as a result of the dredging.
The fish population in the Schiederweiher pond is now being rebuilt with indigenous, local juvenile fish - brown trout from the region (original trout) as well as whitefish and Arctic char. Ecological diversity is maintained with small fish (minnows) and crayfish (noble crayfish, stone crayfish).
