Sometimes it can be easier. The cable cars in Hinterstoder and on the Wurzeralm take you up to almost 2,000 metres above sea level - to where panoramic high-altitude trails begin, great peaks await and alpine pastures and mountain lakes invite you to pause for a moment.
Whether it's a challenging mountain tour, a leisurely family tour to the viewing platform or simply a wide view over the limestone peaks: here you get closer to the mountains. Uncomplicated. At your own pace.
Tip: On selected dates, the sunrise tours in Hinterstoder take you towards the morning - when the peaks glow in the first light, you can find yourself during mountain yoga or enjoy the play of colours at Schafkogelsee lake. Experience customs, tradition and adventure for the whole family at the annual alpine festival with mountain illuminations on the Wurzeralm.
With Europe's fastest funicular railway, you can reach 1,400 metres above sea level in a short time and the starting point for relaxed circular trails up to challenging summit destinations.
The themed trail "2 million years in 2 hours" leads around the largest low and high moor in the Eastern Limestone Alps. If you want to go higher, choose easy summits such as the Stubwieswipfel or hike to the Dümlerhütte. On selected days, the Frauenkarbahn even takes you up to around 1,900 metres. From here, you can set off on the high mountain circular hiking trail with rare Alpine flora - or set your sights on the Warscheneck, one of the region's most striking peaks.
In Hinterstoder, your journey to the top begins in a relaxed manner. The cable car takes you up to 1,400 metres above sea level, while the Höss Express takes you further up to 1,850 metres.
From there, the view of the Tote Gebirge opens up and you have the choice: whether it's alpine summit happiness on the Schrocken, an alpine pasture tour to the Steyrsbergerreit, a leisurely walk around the Schafkogelsee lake, a dream panorama at the viewing platforms or a cosy stop-off on the mountain - step by step, view by view, the mountain feeling grows here.

The gondola in Hinterstoder and the Wurzeralm funicular railway allow the transport of bicycles. However, it is advisable to enquire about the exact conditions and costs in advance.
Please note that on the Wurzeralm only the single trail (category red) into the valley may be ridden, as there is a general ban on cycling on the Wurzeralm!
Pets are allowed on the mountain railways, but not on all of them. It is best to find out in advance whether your pet is welcome and what costs will be incurred.
Yes, the mountain railways offer discounts for families and groups. It's worth asking about special offers.
Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mountains. It is therefore advisable to bring a wind and weatherproof jacket and sturdy shoes. Don't forget rain and sun protection and a first aid kit.
Yes, you can also use the mountain railway for a single journey. The prices for single journeys are generally higher than for a return journey.
Tickets for the mountain railway can usually be purchased directly at the valley stations. It is often also possible to book tickets online.
